Black Crows Ova Freebird Skis (2022)

The Black Crows Freebird line in general is light, but not ultralight, focusing on downhill performance and limited chatter. The Crows found however, that once people chose a ski under 90mm under foot, the intention is for long distance or speed mountaineering missions where weight is paramount. New this year, is the super light weight construction previously found only in the Vastus Freebird. But don’t let the weight fool you, this ski is still for skiing down.

Built on the chassis of the on-piste carving, firm snow dominating Vertis, the Ova Freebird has the shape for stability in technical terrain. A tight 17m turn radius, subtle tip rocker, and slight early rise allow the ski to still pivot quickly in tight chutes or trees.

The weight reduction comes from a new core, thinner edges and cap construction. The wood core is now solid Paulownia, which has become the industry standard for lightweight skis. A cap construction eliminates excess weight from side wall material and thinner edges round out the package.

Spring time hop turns in tight chutes that open up into GS turns on a wide apron are right in the Ova’s wheel house. Mountaineering missions, European touring vacations (Haute Route anyone?), or simply those who prefer a narrow touring ski will really dig the Ova.
