The previous version of the Black Crows Camox Freebird had a zero-carbon design that relied strictly on wood and fiberglass for its core. This was a novel attempt at seeking a traditional ski feel, but lead to a ski that was planky and sluggish. Not to mention a 1600 gram weight penalty was a bit ridiculous for a sub 100mm waisted a touring ski.
The new Camox uses a similar core as the popular Orb Freebird where all of the poplar wood is removed for a paulownia only core, drastically reducing the weight. That reduction in wood stiffness is then reinforced with carbon fibers, glass fibers, and a titanal mounting plate. They also shortened the length of the ABS sidewall to eliminate more weight and give the tip and tail a little more flex. The result is a shedding of two thirds of a pound per ski, coming in at 1,375 grams in the 178 cm length! The new Camox Freebird retains the best-in-class dampening that Black Crows are known and loved for.
The previous Camox’s dimensions were always right for a fast and light setup, but the 1600+ gram weight and plank like feel kept it from being a good match for big missions in a light boot. In fact it was only available via special order, not stocked in our stores. We are now incredibly stoked on this ski and you’ll see it under our boots a lot particularly April through May.
